Costa Rica | Tortuga Island

While at Los Sueños Resort and Marina, we decided to take a day trip to Tortuga Island, or as some may know it as Isla Tortuga. For those of you who are not familiar with the island, let me give you a little background.

Tortuga Island is not only a popular destination in Costa Rica, but it is also known for its beautiful location. The island itself is surrounded by crystal-clear waters with white sand beaches and an abundant amount of marine life. It is located off the southeastern shore of the Nicoya Peninsula, off the coast of the Puntarenas province. The island offers various activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking, making it the perfect day-trip destination.

On day 3 of our adventure, we took the CostaCat Catamaran to the uninhabited island of Tortuga. The Catamaran set sail at 9 a.m. and lasted approximately 45 minutes. The boat ride was amazing! As a family, we were lucky enough to sit on the fly-bridge with the Captain, which gave us an amazing view while we enjoyed our light, fruit breakfast with beverages.. During our ride we were able to spot several turtles and dolphins.

Things To Do On Tortuga Island

There’s lots to do on Tortuga Island. When we arrived, the staff on the CostaCat disembarked with us and accompanied us to our own private area with beach chairs, umbrellas, and tables. It was here that our amazing crew gave us all the details of the island.

If you’re looking for some relaxation, you can spend your day lounging on the beach and enjoying the Costa Rican hospitality. You will quickly learn there is a never-ending abundance of drinks, fresh fruit, and delicious food! The staff makes it easy to enjoy the the crystal-clear water while basking in the sun with a Rum Punch in hand.

If you’re looking for more adventure, there’s no need to worry. You can enjoy your time snorkeling (equipment provided), hitching a ride on the Banana Boat, or discovering the island’s native animals on an Eco-Hike. Better yet, do all three! (All of the activities are included as part of the CostaCat Tour at no extra cost.)

No matter what you decide to do while visiting Tortuga Island, here are some tips before you go.

  • Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! I’m pretty sure it would be impossible to pack too much sunscreen. The island is hot and the sun is intense. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses!
  • Beach Towels. Be sure to pack your own. Beach chairs and umbrellas are included but towels are not.
  • Bring water shoes. The beaches have some rocking areas that could cut your feet. Depending on where you choose to swim, water shoes are definite plus!

Lastly, I want to give a HUGE shout out to the CostaCat staff! We spent the day with Pepe, Sara, Mario, and Giovanni – they were absolutely AMAZING. I give this crew 5 stars and then some! If you are in the area, it would be an absolute shame not to spend the day experiencing the island with this top-notch crew! Pura Vida!

  1. […] Day 3 marked our first official excursion. After breakfast at Dolce Vita, we took a 45-minute boat ride to Tortuga Island. The island was absolutely amazing with so many things to do and enjoy! In fact, I would be selling the island short if I tried to cram all of its awesomeness into a short paragraph. So, I have decided to give it its own post. Read all about it HERE! […]
